GFN goes bilingual

In continuing its collaboration with the Gwangju Foreign Language Network (GFN), in this issue the Gwangju News offers an interview with GFN’s program director in charge of the Way Back with U, the new bilingual sensation. To gain an insight into the show, the Gwangju News obtained this interview with Choi Hang.  -Ed. 

Gwangju News (GN): Thank you for taking the time to do this interview for the Gwangju News, Mr. Choi. First, please introduce yourself, and tell us about your background and about GFN. Also, how long have you been working for GFN?

Choi Hang: First of all, thank you Gwangju News, for offering me this opportunity. My name is Choi Hang (최항), and I have been working at GFN for six years.
There are three foreign language broadcasting companies nationwide: Seoul TBS, Busan BeFM, and Gwangju GFN. My main reason for joining the Gwangju Foreign Language Network was because I wanted to create and deliver a program which provided useful information related to daily life to citizens and international residents living Jeonnam.

GN: Please describe your main duties as a PD and the challenges that come with them. 

Choi Hang: My main duties are program planning and production. The shows I am currently in charge of are Way Back With U, Music on the Road, and documentary productions which are in progress.
In addition, I am also planning and conducting various festivals and events in cooperation with related organizations in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. I also oversee the paperwork and visa documents for our international friends who join the station. 

GN: What programs did you do before “Way Back with U” and which one was your favorite?

Choi Hang: I was in charge of Hello Korea, VIVA DJ, REAL TALK, and WEEKLY REVIEW before this new bilingual show I am doing now.
Each program had a different personality and I was in charge of each of them with affection. If I had to pick one out, it would be Hello Korea that transmits information necessary for real life such as Korean culture, language, history, music, food, travel destinations, art, and traditional Korean culture, to locals and international residents of Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, and which I also coordinated the longest.

GN: How is the new program (“Way Back with U”) different? What does it offer to listeners?

Choi Hang: Firstly, is live and secondly is bilingual being produced in a way that both Koreans and foreign listeners can easily understand and learn about today’s issues in a funny way. 
It runs for two hours, has two hosts and a single segment format, rather than a segmented corner and multiple guest appearances like other existing GFN programs. I think the charm point is that it is broadcast live and communicates with listeners in real time.

GN: Please tell us about the “Music on the Road” show.

Choi Hang: Music on the Road invites musicians from Gwangju and Jeollanam-do directly to the studio to talk about their music and to share their stories. Local musicians create their own radio show for an hour as a radio host. It is a program that provides local musicians with the opportunity to be radio hosts, to tell their stories and introduce their albums to listeners in a direct way.

GN: Please tell us about the documentary ‘Chosun Pop 3.0 Era' (‘조선 팝 3.0시대’) which was selected as a broadcasting promotion project by the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association in 2021. 

Choi Hang: “Chosun Pop 3.0 Era” a is produced in a total of two episodes under the theme of K-POP Chosun which takes the method of using Korean traditional music itself (Gugak), to another level.  Such an example is "Tiger Is Coming," a song by alternative pop band Leenalchi which gained tremendous popularity by making traditional music commercial.
Instead of fusion and crossover with globalization, we promote the 'raw' and 'crude' traditional Korean music. The aim was to revive Lee Nal-chi, one of the most famous pansori and jultagi (tightrope-walking) masters of the 1880s, and the present-day band Leenalchi who has dazzled the world by following that spirit, and reviving it to the public.

GN: You were also part of the team who made the documentary ‘The Gwangju March for Myanmar'(‘미얀마를 위한 광주행진곡’). Please give us some details about it. 

Choi Hang:  The Gwangju March for Myanmar (Planned by Kim Mi-young and directed by Noh Hyung-jin and myself) is a special documentary produced to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement. It is a two-part documentary in Korean and English, that conveys the reality of Myanmar and explores the impact of Gwangju's Democratization Movement on their restoration of democracy and the way to unite in the future.

The first part, “Spring in Myanmar, Save Myanmar,” talks about the democratization movement led by Myanmar's Z generation, which is currently at the center of the protests, and the history of Myanmar's military rule. The second part, “Pray for Myanmar,” tells the story of Gwangju’s longing for spring in Myanmar and the solidarity of our city, which still holds the scars of the May 18 Democratization Movement.

It would be great if listeners could hear a little bit about the democratization movement led by Generation Z of Myanmar and the history of the country's military rule, and feel the solidarity between us in the fight for democracy and our message could be delivered to Myanmar.

인터뷰에 응해 주셔서 감사합니다. 먼저, 자기소개와 GFN과 인연을 맺게 된 배경에 대해 말씀 부탁드립니다. 또한 GFN에서는 얼마동안 일하셨는지요?

안녕하세요 저는 GFN에 입사하여 지금 6년째 광주영어방송 방송제작팀에서 근무하고 있는 최 항 PD입니다.
외국어방송사는 전국에 서울 TBS, 부산BeFM, 광주GFN, 이렇게 3사가 있습니다. 저는 입사 당시 광주 전남 지역 시민들과 거주 외국인들을 위해 다양한 정보를 접할 수 있도록 지역생활 및 자치 정보 제공을 위한 프로그램을 만들어서 전달 해보고 싶다는 생각으로 광주영어방송에 입사하게 되었습니다. 

PD으로서 맡으신 주요 업무는 무엇인지, 그리고 그에 따른 고충은 없으신지 궁금합니다. 

저의 가장 주요 업무는 프로그램 기획 및 제작입니다. 제가 지금 담당 하고 있는 프로그램은 WAY BACK WITH U 와 MUSIC ON THE ROAD 그리고 다큐멘터리 제작도 진행 중입니다. 또한 광주 전남지역 유관 기관들과 연계하여 다양한 축제와 행사 기획 및 진행도 하고 있습니다. 그 외에 부가적으로 다른 업무는 저희 방송사에서 외국인 친구들이 문제 없이 방송 업무를 할 수 있도록 비자 업무를 담당 하고 있습니다.

‘Way Back with U’이전에 어떤 프로그램을 했고 어떤 프로그램이 가장 좋았나요?

WAY BACK WITH U 이전에 Hello Korea, VIVA DJ, REAL TALK, WEEKLY REVIEW등을 담당 했었습니다. 각각의 프로그램 마다 성격이 달라서 그때마다 프로그램에 애정을 갖고 담당했습니다. 그 중에서 꼭 하나를 뽑는다면 아무래도 가장 오래 담당했던 광주전남 내외국인들에게 한국문화, 언어, 역사, 음악, 음식, 여행지, 예술 등 실생활에 필요한 정보와 한국전통 문화를 전파하는 Hello Korea입니다.

새 프로그램 (‘Way Back with U’)은 다른 프로그램들과는 어떻게 다릅니 까? 그리고 청취자에게 어떤 색다른 콘텐츠를 제공합니까?

이번 새로운 프로그램은 2개 언어로 생방송으로 시사 프로그램입니다. 한국인들과 외국인 청취자들 모두 오늘의 이슈에 대해 쉽고 재미있게 들을 수 있도록 제작하고 있습니다. 기존의 저희 GFN 프로그램들처럼 세분화된 코너와 다수의 게스트가 출연하는 방식이 아닌 더블 호스트 진행 방식과 세그먼트 단일화 포맷으로 2시간을 진행하는 새로운 틀을 만들어서 기획 하였습니다. 생방송으로 진행하기 때문에 2시간동안 청취자들과 실시간 소통하며 진행 한다는 점도 저희 프로그램의 매력 포인트라고 생각합니다.

‘Music on the Road’쇼에 대해 소개해주세요.

Music on the road는 광주·전남 지역 뮤지션들을 스튜디오로 직접 초대하여 그들만의 이야기와 음악에 대해 들어보는 시간입니다. 지역 뮤지션들이 라디오 진행자로 1시간동안 본인들의 라디오 쇼를 만들어 갑니다. 지역 로컬 뮤지션들에게 라디오 진행자 라는 기회를 제공하고 그들의 이야기와 앨범을 청취자 들에게 들려주고 본인들을 알릴 수 있는 프로그램입니다.

2021년 방송 문화 진흥 협회에서 방송 진흥 사업으로 선정한 다큐멘터리 '조선 팝 3.0 시대‘에 대해 알려주세요.

2021 조선 팝 3.0 시대 다큐멘터리는 국악을 활용하는 수준을 넘어 국악 그자체를 고스란히 사용하는 방식을 취한 K-POP 화된 조선팝 3.0 이라는 주제로 총 2부작으로 제작해 오는 11월 중 방송될 예정입니다. 이날치밴드의 범 한 마리에 전세계가 들썩이고 있습니다. 우리 것의 세계화를 내걸고 퓨전, 크로스오버하는게 아니라 ’날 걸‘ ’생짜‘ 그대로의 국악을 전면에 내세우고 있습니다. 
과거의 서편제 명창 이날치와 그 정신을 이어서 전세계를 며료시킨 현재의 이날치의 모습을 담아보고 그를 다시 대중 앞으로 부활시켜보려는 의도 입니다.

PD님께서는 다큐멘터리 ‘미얀마를위한 광주의 행진’을 제작한 팀의 일원이라고 들었습니다. 다큐멘터리의 줄거리를 포함하여 제작전반에 있어서 독자들이 흥미롭게 생각할 만한 내용을 이야기해주세요.

미얀마를 위한 광주 행진곡은 (기획 김미영PD,연출 노형진PD, 최항PD) 5.18민주화운동 41주년을 기념하여 제작한 특집 다큐멘터리입니다. 미얀마를 위한 광주행진곡은 현재 미얀마의 실상을 전달하고, 그들의 민주주의 회복에 광주의 민주화운동이 끼친 영향과 향후 연대할 수 있는 길을 모색하는 특집 다큐멘터리로 총 2부작으로 한국어와 영어로 각각 제작 하였습니다.
1부 ‘미얀마의 봄, Save Myanmar’ 에서는 현재 시위의 중심에 서있는 미얀마 Z세대가 이끄는 민주화 운동과 미얀마 군부의 통치 역사에 대해 이야기 합니다.
2부 ‘ 미얀마를 위한 행진곡 Pray for Myanmar 에서는 5.18민주화 운동의 상처를 간직한 광주의 애끓는 연대감과 미얀마의 봄을 염원하는 광주의 메시지를 이야기 합니다.
청취자들이 미얀마 Z세대가 이끄는 민주화 운동과 미얀마 군부의 통치 역사에 대해 조금이나마 들어 볼 수 있고 광주와 미얀마의 연대감을 느끼고 우리의 메시지가 미얀마에 전달 될 수 있다고 생각하는 시간이 된다면 좋을 거 같습니다.
