Before the internet became ubiquitous, peoples' memoirs were kept in a diary, sometimes under lock and key. Only those who were proud (or brave) enough would publish their personal stories for all to read. Thankfully, communication has exploded in the past few decades thanks to the World Wide Web, and that has led to a boom in blogging: an online forum, open to the public, where one expresses oneself and can also receive feedback from viewers. Blogs take many forms, from text to pictures to podcasts to video, just to name a few. When was the last time you perused a blog of interest? A new world of discovery may be just a few mouse clicks away.
Life in Korea, for both the expat and the native, provides ample opportunities to experience something new. However, some of us don't have the inclination to travel all over the country to see all that Korea has to offer. Enter YouTube.com. This website is the third most popular in the entire world, trailing only Google and Facebook. YouTube is basically a free collection of videos submitted mainly by `regular folk’ like you and I. You might have previously dismissed YouTube as nothing but a bunch of amateur videos serving no purpose beyond time-wasting, but if that's the case then you are not watching the good videos, the ones which can actually open your eyes to some great stuff going on around you.
If you have any interest in Korea beyond your daily routine, visit YouTube and search for terms interesting to you. It could be simply `Korea’, `Gwangju’, your favorite Korean dish, favorite K-Pop star - anything. You'll be surprised at the amount of uploaded videos on your topic. Most YouTube videos are in English, but there are also quite a few uploaders making videos in their native languages. Aside from the search terms mentioned above, there are videos about cities and their tourist attractions (as well as those `off the beaten path’ locations most don't know about), restaurants and food, shopping, ESL teaching tips, music videos and personal blogs. Blogs are unique in that they provide the uploader's personal opinions and thoughts about a particular subject. Also, the medium of video enhances the experience, as it contains motion and sound, which picture and text-only blogs do not.
Some YouTube ESL teacher video bloggers are more popular than others; due to the nature of annual teaching contracts, many go back to their countries and the ones who do stay (and continue to post regular videos) are the ones with the largest numbers of followers. You can subscribe to a particular uploader and receive email updates when a new video is posted. Another method to find pertinent videos for you is to check out the `channel’ of an uploader with interesting videos. The next time you watch an enjoyable video, take a look at who posted it. On their channel you may find a list of other channels with content similar to theirs, or users they are following who may have videos related to their topic or niche. Some Koreans have said they learned new things about their own country by watching foreigners' blogs about Korea!
How about recording your own video blogs? Perhaps you don't think you have the equipment or know-how to produce videos? This is not true, as most of us either have a cellphone, digital camera or webcam which are more than adequate to create short videos to document your adventures. Have you ever used the video function on these devices? Possibly not, as you might think you're not a professional video maker and therefore cannot create an interesting video. You're probably not a professional photographer, but that doesn't stop you from taking tons of pictures, right? There are a number of free programs that can be used for simple video editing and are widely available on the internet. Some (Windows Movie Maker, for example) may already be on your computer. Check out some YouTube videos by bloggers in Korea to get some motivation to try it yourself.
An online community forms as people with similar interests gather and communicate. YouTube bloggers in Korea have this community, as countless viewers and uploaders post videos and comments about their thoughts on Korea. Recently, people who upload and watch YouTube videos about Korea have been meeting in Seoul. The third `Seoultube’ took place last month in Hangang Park. Even if you cannot join the fun in Seoul, take a look at some of the great videos about Korea and get involved in the community by leaving comments and even posting your own videos. 쉽게 인터넷을 쓸 수 있기 전, 사람들의 체험담과 같은 수기는 열쇠로 열어야 되는 자물쇠가 달려 있기도 했던, 그런 일기장 속에 기록되어 감춰져 있었다. 본인의 사적인 이야기가 다른 이들에게 읽혀지는 걸 자랑스럽게 여기거나 용감한 자만이 이를 책으로 출판했었다. 그러나 감사하게도, 월드 와이드 웹(WWW: World Wide Web) 덕분에 지난 수십 년 동안 통신량은 폭발적으로 증가하였고, 이는 블로깅 열풍을 불러 일으켰다. 블로그는 개인이 자신을 표현하고 동시에 다른 이용자로부터 의견도 받을 수 있는, 모두에게 열려 있는 온라인 포럼이다. 블로그는 다양한 형식을 취하는데, 그 중 몇 가지만 보면, 글로 이루어진 블로그부터, 사진, 비디오 팟캐스트를 활용하는 블로그까지 다양한 형식이 있다. 관심 있는 블로그를 찾아 마지막으로 글을 읽었던 때는 언제인가? 새로운 세계의 발견은 몇 번의 마우스 클릭만으로 이루어질 수 있다.
외국인이든 한국인이든, 한국에서의 생활은 새로운 것을 경험해 볼 수 있는 엄청난 기회의 장이다. 그러나, 우리들 중 일부는 한국이 우리에게 줄 수 있는 그 모든 것을 직접 보기 위해, 전 국토를 여행까지 할 의사가 없기도 하다. 유튜브에 접속해보라. (www.youtube.com) 이 사이트는 구글과 페이스북에 이어 전세계에서 세 번째로 인기 있는 사이트이다. 기본적으로 유튜브는 대부분 당신과 나와 같은 일반인들이 게시해놓은 영상물들의 무료 집합소라고 보면 된다. 어쩌면 이전에 당신은 유튜브를 단지 시간낭비일 뿐인 아무 목적도 없는 아마추어 영상물 더미 정도로 간주해왔을지도 모른다. 만약 그런 경우라면, 당신은 주변에서 일어나고 있는 엄청난 일들에 대해 당신의 눈을 뜨게 해줄 그런 좋은 영상을 보지 못한 것뿐이다.
만약 당신이 일상을 너머 한국에 대한 관심이 있다면, 유튜브를 방문해 당신이 관심 있는 단어를 검색해보라. 그 단어들은 단순히 `한국’, `광주’가 될 수 있고, 또는 가장 좋아하는 한국 음식이나 K-Pop 스타 등 어떠한 것도 될 수 있다. 당신은 당신이 검색한 주제와 관련되어 게시된 영상물의 양에 꽤 놀랄 것이다. 많은 수의 유튜브 영상들은 영어로 되어 있지만, 자국어로 제작된 영상을 올리는 이들도 꽤 상당 수 있다. 위에서 언급된 검색어 이외에, 도시나 관광명소(대부분 사람들이 잘 알지 못하는, 사람들의 발길이 닿지 않는 지역까지!), 식당과 음식, 쇼핑, 영어교수법, 뮤직비디오 그리고 개인 블로그까지 다양한 내용을 다룬 비디오들이 있다. 비디오 블로그는 특정한 주제에 대한 블로거 개인의 의견과 생각을 나타낼 수 있기 때문에 특별하다. 또한, 동작과 소리를 담고 있는 영상매체를 전달수단으로 하기에, 사진과 텍스트로만 구성된 블로그보다 경험의 강도를 높일 수 있다.

당신이 직접 만든 영상이 담긴 블로그를 운영해보는 것은 어떨까? 아마 당신은 자신이 영상을 만들 장비나 노하우가 없다 생각할지도 모른다. 하지만, 우리들 대부분은 당신의 체험들을 기록해 짧은 영상을 만들기엔 더할 나위 없이 적절한 수단인 휴대전화, 디지털 카메라 또는 웹캠 중 하나 정도는 가지고 있기에, 이는 사실이 아니다. 이러한 장비들에 있는 영상촬영 기능을 사용해 본 적이 있는가? 당신 자신이 전문적인 영상제작자가 아니고 따라서 흥미로운 영상을 만들 수 없다고 생각해, 아마 이런 기능을 사용하지 않았을 것이다. 그런데 비록 당신이 전문 사진작가가 아니어도, 그 사실이 사진을 찍지 못하도록 만들지는 않을 것이다. 그렇지 않은가? 간단한 영상편집을 할 수 있는 무료 프로그램들이 있고, 이는 인터넷 상에서 쉽게 구할 수 있다. 윈도우 무비 메이커(Windows Movie Maker)와 같은 몇몇 프로그램들은 컴퓨터에 이미 설치되어 있기까지 하다. 스스로 영상제작을 시도해보고자 할 때, 자극과 동기부여를 받고자 한다면 비디오 블로거들의 채널을 방문해봐라.
온라인 커뮤니티는 비슷한 관심을 가지고 있는 사람들이 모여 소통할 때, 만들어지는 것이다. 수많은 방문자와 업로더들이 한국에 관련된 영상을 게시하고 코멘트를 달면서 한국의 유투브 블로거들 역시 이러한 커뮤니티를 이루고 있다. 최근 한국에 대한 유투브 영상을 제작해 게시하거나 보았던 사람들이 서울에서 모이는 자리가 있었다. 지난달 한강공원에서 열린 제 3회 `서울튜브(SeoulTube)’다. 서울에서 진행된 행사의 재미를 직접 보지 못했더라도, 한국에 관련된 이 굉장한 영상들을 보며 의견도 남겨보고, 더 나아가 당신이 만든 영상도 올려보면서 이 커뮤니티 활동에 참여해보라.
