Stray Cat Saves Life
Dawn Bennie was home alone in the kitchen one night when her house started to burn down around her. As the kitchen door was shut and she is partially deaf, she did not hear the smoke alarms go off outside the door. She did, however, notice the friendly neighborhood stray cat who would usually come up to her legs. The night when she smelled smoke and thought it was just the coal range, the nameless cat started “freaking out” and trying to get her out of the house. As a result she thought again about the smoke, and when she realized it was from a fire she kept all her doors closed and phoned the fire brigade from outside. By the time they arrived at about 1am most of the house was destroyed, but Dawn was safe outside with the mysterious friendly cat hero.

Bird Brain Makes Owner Famous
Nan Jihae has been playing and talking with, and whistling to Lala for ten years now. Lala is an African grey parrot. One day a couple of years ago when Jihae took him out of his cage, Lala whistled back to her in the same way she had at him. She realized he had a great sense of sound. Now, Lala entertains visitors to Seoul’s zoo with his mimicry of Hollywood horror movie screams, electronic computer beeps, and cat meows, amongst other sounds. African grey parrots live to be about forty years old. Jihae is currently teaching Lala the entire lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody.

In an English Country Garden
A woman in the small country town of Todmorden, in West Yorkshire, England, has started a movement of growing and giving away her vegetables to anyone in town that wants them. It took passersby and random strangers about six months to realize that one Mary Clear was serious about them helping themselves freely. Since then, as news of her strange habit has spread, people in other towns have been inspired to also grow their own food and then share it openly. Meanwhile in Todmorden, using small garden plots in front and back yards, even the local police station contributes to the new movement for the health and food safety of people who live locally. The movement has been dubbed Incredible Edible, and as a result, the people of the local town expect to be entirely self sufficient in terms of food within six years.

사람을 구한 떠돌이 고양이
Dawn Bennie 씨의 집이 불에 타기 시작한 어느 날 밤, 그녀는 혼자 부엌에 있었다. 부엌 문은 닫혀 있었고 그녀는 귀가 잘 안 들리기 때문에 화재 경보기가 울리는 것도 몰랐다. 그러나 평상시에 그녀 다리 옆으로 다가오곤 하던 동네의 친근한 떠돌이 고양이가 부엌에 있다는 사실을 알아차렸다. 그날 저녁 그녀는 연기 냄새를 맡았지만 그저 화덕 냄새겠거니 하고 넘기려고 하고 있었는데, 그 이름 모를 고양이는 질겁하며 그녀를 집 밖으로 나가게 하려고 애를 썼다. 그래서 이 고양이 때문에 그녀는 연기에 대하여 다시금 생각하게 되었고 바로 불 때문에 연기가나는 것이라는 사실을 알게 되었을 때 집 안의 모든 문을 닫고 밖으로 나가서 소방서에 전화를 걸었다. 소방대가 도착한 새벽 1시쯤, 집은 거의 무너져 있었지만 이 신비스럽고 다정스러운 영웅인 고양이와 함께 밖으로 대피해 있었던 그녀는 무사했다.

주인을 유명하게 만든 앵무새
남지혜 사육사는 10년 째 `랄라’와 함께 놀고 이야기하고 휘파람을 불며 지내오고 있다. `랄라’는 회색 앵무새이다. 약 2년 전 어느 날, 지혜씨가 랄라를 새장에서 꺼냈을 때 랄라는 지혜씨가 휘파람을 불었던 방법을 그대로 따라서 휘파람을 불었다. 그래서 랄라가 소리에 뛰어난 감각을 가지고 있음을 알게 되었다. 현재 랄라는 서울의 동물원에서 할리우드 공포 영화 속의 비명이나 전자계산기의 `삐-’ 하는 소리 그리고 고양이 울음소리를 흉내내면서 사람들을 즐겁게 해주고 있다. 지혜씨는 현재 랄라에게 보헤미안 랩소디의 노랫말을 가르치는 중이다.
