사회인야구 파장을 일으키는 `bombers’
The Gwangju Bombers are the latest addition to the vast array of international-led clubs and organizations in Gwangju. They are the first foreign team to participate in a local Korean baseball league.
The team started as a group of people looking for a bit of fun who played irregularly at Chosun University. On occasion they would play informal, friendly games against Korean teams, mainly on public holidays. Eventually, it was decided that the next logical step would be to officially form a team and begin entering tournaments and leagues around Gwangju. The Gwangju International Baseball Team was formed, but rules governing the local baseball league unfairly prevented non-Korean teams from entering competitions, an early hurdle that was frustrating for all involved. The team continued to train together and play the occasional friendly game while it waited for something to change.
Due to work commitments, the team’s founder Tony Warren was unable to develop the team any further. Three other members of the team decided to take the reins. Through the joint efforts of a Korean named Jackie Choi, an Australian named Darrell Slater and an American named Shawn Roe, the Bombers were able to come to an agreement with league organizers, and have been included in the league for the new season. Since a catchy and memorable team name is practically a prerequisite in a league setting, the team changed its name to the Gwangju Bombers.
Currently the team consists of about 20 members, most of whom are English teachers at academies, public schools and universities. Scheduling regular training sessions is often a challenge as team members have varied schedules during the week. However, the team still tries to meet as often as possible on weekends to put in a few hours of hard work and have a good time on the field.
The team has come a long way since it was first established and has even managed to secure the support of a few generous sponsors, including Dr Choi’s Oriental Medical Clinic, Tequilaz and The First Alleyway. The Gwangju Bombers have made an early positive impact on the local league in this, their debut season. At the time of writing, the team had completed three league games, notching two wins and one narrow loss. They scored 43 runs in the process.
When asked whether the main purpose of the team was serious competition or simply just to have a bit of fun, Slater said, “It started out as just a bit of fun when we played at Chosun, but the competition has increased for sure. We want to win every game of course. I feel like we do have a lot of fun though.”
He also added, “As Gwangju’s only foreign baseball team there has been a lot of interest from people wanting to get involved. We have guys who can hit the ball, but we have some issues on defense and sometimes we don’t have enough pitchers.”
Currently there are no tournaments scheduled for the next few months, but league games take place every Saturday in Buk-gu’s Oryung-dong. The field is next to the river, close to the Cheomdan Bridge near the Lotte Mart.

이 팀은 조선대학교에서 재미삼아 비정기적으로 경기를 하던 사람들로 시작했다. 주로 공휴일에 가끔씩 한국인 팀들과 친선게임을 가지곤 했다. 마침내 다음 진행단계로 공식적인 팀 결성으로 결정하고 광주지역 공식시합이나 경기에 출전하기 시작한다. 광주외국인야구팀이 결성되었지만, 불공정하게도 사회인야구 리그 참가에 비한국인팀은 금지되는 규정으로 초기단계 장애물에 걸려 팀원들을 힘들었다. 이 팀은 지속적으로 함께 훈련을 했고 어떤 변화가 있을 때까지 기다리면서 가끔씩 친선게임을 했다.
팀 단장 Tony Warren 씨가 직장생활로 더 이상 팀을 발전시킬 수 없어서 팀의 다른 세 명이 통솔을 넘겨받기로 했다. 한국인 제키최, 호주인 Darrell Slater 그리고 미국인 Shawn Roe의 공동 노력으로 밤버스는 리그연맹의 동의를 끌어냈고 새로운 시즌부터 시합에 포함되었다. 한명의 코치와 인상적인 팀명은 실질적으로 리그출전을 위해 꼭 있어야하는데 팀은 팀명을 광주`bombers’로 결정했다.
현재 이 팀은 약 20명으로 구성돼 있고, 거의 대부분이 학원, 초중고교, 대학의 영어강사들이다. 주중에는 팀원들이 각자 일정이 있어서 정규훈련 시간을 잡기가 종종 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그러나 야구장에서 좋은 시간을 갖고 몇 시간의 강한 훈련을 하기 위해 주말에 가능한 자주 만나려고 한다.
이 팀이 창단되고, 한의사 최원장님, 데킬라즈, 퍼스트앨리웨이와 같은 좋은 후원자들의 도움으로 안정적으로 운영되어 큰 발전을 일궜다. `bombers’는 데뷔시즌 초반부터 긍정적인 평이다. 이 기사를 쓸 때는 세 번의 경기를 마쳤고, 2승 1패를 기록했다. 현재 43점을 득점했다.
이 팀의 주된 목적을 진지한 시합 또는 사소한 재미 중 무엇인지 물었을 때 Slater 씨는 “우리가 조선대학교에서 경기를 할 땐 재미삼아 시작을 했었지만, 지금은 시합 쪽으로 확실히 기울었어요. 우리는 매 경기에서 이기고 싶어요. 물론 많은 재미를 느끼지만요”라고 말했다.
“광주 유일의 외국인야구팀이라서 저희 팀으로 들어오고 싶은 사람들이 많이 있어요. 저희는 타자는 많이 있지만 혹평을 듣고 있는 수비와 간혹 투수가 부족해요”라며 Slater 씨는 덧붙인다.
현재 다음 달에는 정해진 공식시합은 없지만, 매주 토요일 북구 오룡동에서 경기가 펼쳐진다. 이 야구장은 롯데마트 근처 첨단교와 가까운 강 옆에 있다. 야구 경기를 하고 싶은 사람뿐만 아니라 바깥으로 나가고 싶거나 `bombers’ 리그경기 중 하나에 출전하고 싶은 지역민은 Darrell Slater 또는 제키최 씨에게 페이스북을 통해 연락주기 바란다.
