The Uprising: Gwangju ROK Ultimate Frisbee Team
The Uprising, Gwangju’s official ROK-Ultimate Frisbee team, has just concluded its sixth season. Captained by handler standouts Mickey Joe Mojica and Charles Costello, the Uprising failed to capture the championship as in years past, but finished their last game with a respectable score of 6-10. There was no disappointment to be found on the team; Uprising and ROK-U offers an experience that goes beyond wins and losses.
“With the league realigning rosters, we had a lot of new players,” Captain Mojica said, “But teaching the game is really enjoyable. And ROK-U is great for all skill levels; everyone gets involved on the field.”
Cutter-handler Ally “GoHard” Golightly mirrored that sentiment. “Yeah, whatever your goal, you can have fun. Some people play to drink on the sidelines and share the camaraderie. Others like the athleticism and competition. It’s really laid back.”
The most common themes that emerged when speaking to members of the Uprising were the friendships and experiences they took away.
“It’s really unique and fun,” Cutter Lana Kiss said. “Having the chance to travel to different cities, hang out with friends, go to some great parties after the games, you meet so many people. Playing Ultimate will end up being some of my favorite memories in Korea. It’s great to have everyone [men and women] playing together, too.”
This spring began quickly, with two Gwangju wins against Daejeon and Gimcheon in games hosted in Daejeon. Playing out of his natural position, handler David “Carne” Miller led the way, with newcomer Micah Korinek corralling five goals on the weekend. After a long break, the team travelled to Busan for the Haeundae Beach games. There, the sand stole Uprising’s major advantage of speed and the wind wreaked havoc with their neophyte handlers. They lost all five games, but came back the next weekend to steal two from Gunsan and Uprising’s sister team from Mokpo.
Alternating wins and losses put them in a difficult matchup in the tournament, against the top-seeded Busan Evolution. Evolution displayed the skill that brought them there and managed to knock the Uprising out. But as usual, the Uprising won the league party held that weekend.
ROK-U is a co-recreational league. With 112 women and 189 men this season, line-ups on the field featured four men and three women. The Gwangju women had particularly good seasons, garnering universal acclaim and giving stalwart performances in the Finals. Many cannot return for the next season, however, and so recruitment has already ramped up.
Captain Costello is excited to add new members. “We can’t wait for next season. Our team is really cool, and every time we add people it gets that much better.”
The Uprising takes its tradition and past championships seriously. But there is clear sentiment amongst the players, past and present, that the relationships and family-feeling are what best define the team. It was how the team was founded and what will help carry the Gwangju Uprising into the 2014 fall season and beyond.

공식 대한민국 얼티미트 프리스비 광주팀인 `업라이징’이 6번째 시즌을 끝냈다. 뛰어난 핸들러인 Mickey Joe Mojica 씨와 Charles Costello 씨가 주장으로 있는 `업라이징’은 지난 몇 년처럼 우승하는 데는 실패했지만 마지막 경기에서 6대10이라는 만족스런 점수로 끝을 냈다. 팀원들은 `업라이징’과 대한민국 얼티미트 대회는 승패를 뛰어 넘어 그 이상의 경험을 준다고 말하며 전혀 실망하지 않았다..
“이번 리그를 위해 재정비된 출전팀으로 새로운 선수들을 영입하게 됐어요”라고 주장인 Mojica 씨는 말했다. “경기를 가르쳐주는 것은 정말 재미있어요. 그리고 ROK-U에서는 어떤 실력이든지 경기에 참여할 수 있어요.”
커터이면서 핸들러인 Ally “Gohard” Golightly 씨는 “예, 여러분의 목표가 무엇이든, 재미있으실 거예요. 어떤 사람들은 경기장 주변에서 술을 마시면서 친목을 쌓기도 해요. 또 어떤 사람들은 운동정신과 경쟁을 좋아하죠. 정말 편안해요”라며 동의했다.
`업라이징’ 팀원들과 이야기를 나눌 때 나오는 가장 공통된 주제는 그들이 얻어간 우정과 경험이었다.
“정말 독특하고 재밌어요”라고 커터인 Lana Kiss 씨가 말했다. “다른 도시를 여행하는 기회를 갖고 친구들과 어울리고 경기 후 멋진 파티에 가서 많은 사람들을 만나죠. `얼티미트’에 참여하는 것은 한국에서 저의 가장 좋은 추억이 될 거예요. 또한 남녀 모두가 같이 경기한다는 건 멋진 일이죠.”
대전에서 열린 대회에서 대전과 김천을 상대로 광주팀이 두 번이나 승리를 거두면서 올 봄 시즌은 빠르게 시작됐다. 핸들러 David “Carne” Miller가 자기의 원래 포지션을 벗어나며 경기를 이끌어, 새로 영입된 Micah Korinek 씨와 함께 주말에 다섯 골을 넣었다. 긴 휴식 후 팀은 해운대 비치게임을 위해 부산으로 떠났다. 모래는 `업라이징’의 주요 강점인 스피드를 빼앗고, 바람은 새로운 핸들러들에게 큰 혼란을 일으켰다. 다섯 경기 모두 패배하였지만 돌아 와 그 다음 주말에는 군산과 `업라이징’자매팀인 목포를 상대로 두 게임을 이겼다.
승패가 왔다 갔다 하면서, 먼저 대회 결승전에 올라온 부산 `에볼루션’팀과 토너먼트 대항에서는 어려운 대결구도에 놓이게 됐다. `에볼루션’팀은 그들만의 기술을 선보여, `업라이징’팀을 겨우 쓰러뜨렸다. 그러나 `업라이징’팀은 그 주말에 있었던 리그 경기에서는 평소처럼 승리를 거뒀다.
ROK-U는 프리스비 레크리에이션 경기이다. 이번 시즌에는 112명의 여성과 189명의 남성이 참가했고 4인 남성과 3인 여성이 경기의 한 팀으로 구성되었다. 특히, 광주 팀의 여자 선수들은 특별히 좋은 시즌을 보냈다. 결승전에서까지 흔들리지 않는 시합을 보여주어 모든 사람들에게 갈채를 받았다. 그러나 많은 선수들이 다음 시즌에는 참가할 수 없기 때문에 신규 선수 모집이 이미 열렬히 시작되었다.
주장인 Costello 씨는 새로운 멤버를 영입하는 것이 설렌다며 “다음 시즌을 기다릴 수가 없어요. 저희 팀은 정말 대단하고 매번 실력이 더 좋은 선수들을 들여와요”라고 말했다.
`업라이징’은 전통과 과거의 우승을 진지하게 살펴본다. 과거와 현재의 선수들 사이에서 분명한 같은 생각은 좋은 관계와 가족적인 분위기가 이 팀을 가장 잘 정의한다는 것이다. 이것은 이 팀이 어떻게 창단됐는지 말해주는 것이고, 또한 `광주 업라이징’을 2014가을시즌과 그 다음 시즌까지 이끌어 가도록 도와주는 바로 그것이다.
