꼬마 부처들: 해인사의 동자승들
The holiday season tends to conjure up thoughts of home and comfort for those who celebrate. These thoughts manifest in different ways for everyone, but family is a common theme.
The child monks of Haein Temple in Jangseong are an unusual family. For a variety of reasons, the parents of these children have given them to the head monk at Haein Temple for safekeeping. Though predominantly male, there are three girls living amongst the group of 20. The head monk, Venerable Muhak, is their sole caregiver, and receives no money from the government for his work, because he has adopted these children as his own. He is their father as well as their mother, and the children are each other’s brothers and sisters. The temple is not an orphanage and you may not go there to adopt a child; it is a permanent home.
The young monks range in age from 3 to 18. They attend a normal public school nearby and live together on the temple grounds. In winter, they stay warm by sleeping in the temple, but they also have a two-story dormitory where they eat and study. Together they wake up every morning before 5 a.m. to meditate and read teachings from the Diamond Sutra. They also are visited once a month by Kim Young-im, founder of the Korean Organization of Natural Approach (KONA) Storybook Center in Gwangju. She brings with her a small team of volunteers who help the monks improve their English skills as part of the Extensive Reading (ER) program. When they are old enough, the monks may continue with their education by going to university or seeking employment at a secular job.
When Kim first visited the temple 10 years ago, the head monk and children were living in a tent. Through generous donations and other forms of compassion, the facilities have since expanded dramatically, so that the child monks live a life with many similarities to their public school peers. They play with each other during free time, which may entail playing with a basketball or a “dog pile” of boys being boys. The older kids generally keep to themselves, but they still look after and care for their younger siblings. The young children cry, the adolescents make trouble and the older ones brood; they are a very large but very normal family.
This time of year offers a period of reflection, so the temple gives thanks to the people who have found their way into their lives and for everything they have received. Family, no matter its shape, size, make-up or functionality, is the most beautiful gift we have been given. While Haein Temple may not have a non-traditional family arrangement, they offer each other the love and support we each receive from our own.

연휴는 집과 편안함이란 생각들을 떠오르게 한다. 이러한 생각들은 각자에게 여러 형태로 나타나지만 공통적인 주제는 가족이다.
장성 해인사의 동자승들은 평범하지 않은 가족이다. 이 아이들의 부모들은 각기 다른 이유로 해인사 주지 스님에게 자녀들을 양육 해달라고 보냈다. 이런 아이들은 20명 정도 되는데 대부분은 남자이고, 3명은 여자이다. 무학 주지스님은 이들의 유일한 보호자이며, 이 아이들을 자기 자식으로 입양했기 때문에 정부로부터 아무런 도움을 받지 못한다. 그 스님은 그들의 아버지이자 어머니이며, 그 아이들은 서로의 형제이자 자매이다. 다시 말하면 해인사 절은 고아원이 아니고 아이들의 집이어서 아이들을 입양하러 갈 수 있는 곳이 아니다.
동자승들의 나이는 3세에서 18세까지이다. 그들은 근처의 공립학교에 다니며 절에서 함께 산다. 이들의 숙소는 2층 기숙사로 이곳에서 먹고 공부하며, 겨울에는 따뜻한 법당에서 잠을 잔다. 이 아이들은 매일 새벽 5시 이전에 일어나 명상을 하고 금강경을 독송한다. 김영임 씨는 광주의 KONA 스토리북 센터 대표이며 한 달에 한 번씩 몇몇 자원봉사자 가족들과 함께 그곳을 방문해 이들의 영어능력을 향상시킬 수 있도록 영어 다독 프로그램을 실시해 오고 있다. 이 동자승들이 자라면, 대학에 가서 공부를 계속할 수도 있고, 절이 아닌 세상 밖의 직업을 찾아 그곳을 나올 수도 있을 것이다.
김영임 씨가 10년 전에 그 곳을 처음 방문했을 때, 그 주지스님과 아이들은 텐트에서 살고 있었다. 그 후 아낌없는 기부와 여러 가지 도움 덕택에 시설들이 많이 확장되었고, 동자승들의 생활도 또래 학교 친구들과 비슷해져 갔다. 그들은 여느 사내아이들처럼 쉬는 시간에 농구를 하거나 한 사람 위에 여러 사람이 엎어져 무더기를 만드는 “dog pile”같은 게임을 한다. 보통 나이든 형들은 동생들과 어울려 놀지 않지만 어린 형제, 자매들을 잘 보살펴준다. 이곳에서 어린이들은 울고, 청소년들은 골치거리를 일으키고 더 나이 든 애들은 우울 할 때도 있지만 이 아이들은 대가족으로 이루어진 정상적인 가정을 이루고 있다.
한 해의 이 맘 때는 되돌아 보는 시기이다. 그래서 해인사 절에서는 방문해준 모든 사람들과 그들이 받았던 모든 것에 감사하고 있다. 가족은 형태, 크기, 구성이나 기능에 관계없이 우리가 받은 것 중 가장 아름다운 선물이다. 해인사는 비전통적인 가족 구성을 갖고 있을지 모르지만, 그들은 우리 각자가 우리 자신 가정으로부터 갖는 것과 같은 사랑과 지원을 그들 서로에게 주고 있다.
