Let’s #CleanGwangju Together
With summer here, my girlfriend, Lianne, and I have taken up strolling through our neighborhood. The cool night sky is a welcome respite from the sweaty humidity of an afternoon in the classroom.
A walk around the block is nice - but the litter… we could not NOT notice all the litter in our neighborhood. We found ourselves glaring down at wayward trash rather than taking in the last of the evening sun’s red-orange glare.
We did not intend to start picking up litter, but as we walked, it became impossible not to.
So we turned around, went back inside, up five flights of stairs, got two plastic bags and only one pair of gloves - sharing one opposite hand each - and went back outside.
AND SO WE STARTED TO #CLEANGWANGJU
#CleanGwangju is a volunteer campaign encouraging all Gwangju residents (you, dear reader) to individually serve a small, though collectively important, role in respecting our city.

Don your favorite pair of garbage collecting gloves, grab a bag and your trusty tongs (if you have them), and head out on a leisurely walk to pick up some litter around your block. Please use discretion and dispose of all trash appropriately. (See Gwangju’s guidelines for waste disposal at http://guidelines.CleanGwangju.org.)
You might be surprised with how quickly you fill a bag and how good you feel afterward. Even if it is only for 10 minutes, your example can be one for others.
Take a photo of the reclaimed litter and tag it with #CleanGwangju on social media. If you use Instagram, your photo will be added to our digital landfill at http://CleanGwangju.org, which displays all the litter that NO LONGER blots our beautiful streets. WHY?
Well, why not? WE LIVE HERE.
And no matter for how long or short that time might be, as foreigners and Koreans together, we respect our city. Gwangju is no place for litter.
Drawing attention to our trash problem is one small thing we each can do, to not simply complain nor cast our City of Light in a negative one, but, in fact, do the complete opposite: to support and rekindle that light burning in the torch we hold high, called Gwangju. Sometimes we all just need a gentle reminder and nudge forward from our friends.
Still, recognizing a multitude of factors, economic and political among them, waste management is clearly a complicated issue here. We are not going to clean all the litter from every street. But maybe someone will think twice the next time he or she considers littering, a blank stare clearly asking, “Why is this guy picking up trash?”
It seems some people never consider that they could simply bend down, pick up some litter too, and be part of a solution. They can be just like YOU.
I cannot speak great Korean, but one night a woman stopped to say “Go-ma-wo-yo” to us. She said some other things that I did not understand, but “thank you” was enough.
More often than not, however, people will not say “thank you.” They probably will not even acknowledge you. So allow me to acknowledge you right now, thank you.

여름이 되면서 나와 내 여자친구 리앤은 함께 동네 산책을 시작했다. 시원한 여름 저녁 하늘은 오후 교실의 끈적끈적한 습기를 잠시 잊게 해준다.
골목을 돌아나가는 것까진 참 좋았는데 이 쓰레기들…. 우리는 동네 구석구석의 쓰레기들 못본 척 지나칠 수가 없었다. 어느 순간부터 일몰 전 마지막으로 불그스름하게 빛나는 태양보다 널부러진 쓰레기들을 바라보고 있었던 것이다.
처음부터 쓰레기를 주으려고 했던 것은 아닌데 걷다보니 그러지 않을 수가 없었다.
그래서 다시 뒤로 돌아 계단 다섯 층을 올라집으로 들어가 비닐봉지 두개와 장갑 한짝을 사이좋게 나눠끼고 밖으로 나갔다.
그리고 우리는 #CleanGwangju(깨끗한 광주)를 시작했다.
#CleanGwangju는 모든 광주 시민들이 (이 글을 읽고 있는 독자 당신도)개인적으로는 조그만 일부터, 그러나 모두가 모이면 광주를 가꾸는데 큰 역할을 할 수 있도록 격려하는 자원활동 캠페인이다.
함께 해요
좋아하는 쓰레기 수거 장갑을 착용하고, 한 손엔 봉지를, 다른 손엔 믿음직한 집게를 (만약 있다면)들고 가벼운 걸음으로 나가 집 주변의 쓰레기를 주워보자. 아, 분리수거는 물론 철저히 해야 한다. (http://guidelines.CleanGwangju.org에서 광주 분리수거 가이드를 볼 수 있다.)
얼마나 봉지가 금방 차는지, 그러고 나면 얼마나 기분이 좋은지 모른다. 10분 만이라도 쓰레기를 줍는다면 다른 사람들에게 좋은 본보기가 될 수 있다.
다 주은 쓰레기는 사진을 찍고 #CleanGwangju 태그를 붙여서 소셜 미디어에 올려보자. 만약 인스타그램 사용자라면 사진을 http://CleanGwangju.org에 있는 디지털 매립지에 올려 이제 이 쓰레기들이 더 이상 아름다운 거리를 망치지 못한다고 전시한다. http://facebook.CleanGwangju.org에서 페이스북 그룹 토의에 참여해 보는 것은 어떤가?
왜 해요?
왜 안하는가? 우리가 여기 사는데.
얼마나 오랜 시간 살았는지와는 상관 없이, 외국인과 한국인들 다함께, 우리는 우리가 사는 도시를 아낀다. 광주는 쓰레기를 위한 도시가 아니다.
우리 쓰레기 문제에 대한 관심을 끌어내는 것은 우리가 할 수 있는 하나의 작은 일이다. 단순히 빛의 도시에 대해 불평하거나 부정적인 시선을 던지기 위해서가 아니라, 정확히는 그 반대로, 우리가 높이 치켜들고 있는 횃불 안에서 빛나는 빛, 광주를 다시 불 붙이고 지지하기 위함이다. 때로 문제에 관해 살짝 말해주거나 친구가 팔꿈치로 꾹 찌르기만 하는 것이 필요할 뿐이다.
경제적·정치적인 것 등 다수의 요인들 때문에 여전히 쓰레기 관리가 복잡한 문제라는 것을 안다. 우리가 모든 골목 골목의 쓰레기 전부를 치우려는 것은 아니다. 그러나 누군가는 분명 다음에 쓰레기를 버리려 할 때 한 번 더 생각할 것이다. 멍하게 바라보는 시선이지만 분명하게 물을 것이다. “왜 이 사람은 쓰레기를 줍고 있지?”라고 말이다.
어떤 사람들은 자기 자신도 허리를 굽혀 쓰레기를 주워 해결책의 일부가 될 수 있다는 걸 생각도 못하는 것 같다. 그들도 당신처럼 될 수 있다.
나는 한국말을 잘 하지는 못하지만 어느 날 밤 한 여자분이 멈춰서 우리에게 “고-마-워-요”라고 말했다. 그 분은 내가 알아들을 수 없는 말을 더 했지만, “고맙다”는 말이면 충분했다.
그렇지만 사람들이 “고맙다”고 자주 말하지는 않는다. 아마 당신을 알아차리지도 못할 것이다. 그러니 나라도 당신을 지금 바로 알아보고 말할 수 있게 해주면 좋겠다. 고맙다고 말이다.
