As an international resident living in Gwangju, I know that learning Korean is not only difficult but also time consuming, not to mention that there is the lack of proper classes available! But ever since I discovered TongTong Academy, not only have I acquired more knowledge of the language, but I have also managed to do this in the evenings after finishing work, at my own pace and without any stress. With a desire to help other fellow residents like me, I reached out to the owners of TongTong Academy for an inside and in-depth look at their work. -Melline

Gwangju News (GN): Hello, and thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Please introduce yourselves to our readers. 

Hong Song-i: Hello, Melline. My name is Hong Song-i, and I am a native Korean instructor who has lived in Gwangju all of my life – except for a few years when I moved around with my father when I was younger and a single year when I went to the Philippines as an exchange student.

Ahn Pyeong-an: And my name is Ahn Pyeong-an. I teach Korean here at TongTong Academy. I am not originally from Gwangju, but I have lived here continuously ever since I completed my military service and entered Chonnam University. Gwangju is my second hometown.

GN: How did you become partners and how long have the two of you been working together? 
Ahn Pyeong-an: It has been over four years already since I started working at TongTong in 2017, but I met Song-i for the first time much earlier than that, in 2008. We met for the first time in Manila in the Philippines, where we were both exchange students and college colleagues together, but now we are partners and joint executives. You may not believe it, but Ms. Hong is older than you think [smiling]. I think I am lucky to have met such a good partner, but it is true that I was hesitant when deciding to work together because I thought about my family first. (I wanted to make a careful decision because she was my wife's sister.) 

Hong Song-i: Pyeong-an said I am older, but there is only a one-year difference between us. When we were students studying abroad together, the Korean Wave was in full swing in the Philippines, and I was originally interested in teaching Korean, so I worked in a Korean club called Arirang. Chan-song (another TongTong staff member), Pyeong-an and I worked in the same club, and we began dreaming of working together because we worked so well with one another. When we came back to Korea, Chan-song and I first started our Korean language teaching business, and we finally succeeded in persuading Pyeong-an, who worked at a company, to join us. After that, a Korean-American language instructor, Yoo Mi-ran (Miranda New), also joined us, and ever since then we have had a total of four Korean teachers working together.

GN: What were you doing before you met in the Philippines?
Hong Song-i: Before participating in the exchange student program, I taught Korean to international students while studying English at Chonnam National University. Even though it was my native language, teaching Korean was more difficult than I thought, so I started learning it systematically, starting with a teacher training course. Before I solidified my career as a Korean language instructor, I worked at an English academy, but I always had a dream to start a Korean language academy with people I liked. After this, I taught Korean as a volunteer at the Gwangju International Center, and later I became a coordinator there. Luckily, I was able to work at the GIC for three years under Dr. Shin Gyonggu, whom I respected very much. I made precious memories and learned a lot through the GIC that I will never forget. That was when I met my first Korean language class students, who are still close to me even though they are now scattered around the world – we still correspond from time to time. Thanks to my experience at the GIC, I began dreaming of having a language academy that would leave warm memories in the hearts of those involved. 

In 2004, I began to communicate with several teachers, including Chan-song. At first, not only Korean but also Japanese and Chinese teachers joined. We named the academy “TongTong Language Class” because it means that we can communicate through both language and our hearts. In 2018, Chan-song finally succeeded in scouting Pyeong-an, and sometime after that, Miranda New joined, too, completing our team. After completing her master's degree in Korean Language Education at Chonnam National University, Miranda has been providing wonderful classes employing her strong background in language learning. All the foreign teachers who were with us in the beginning have since left Korea for personal reasons, and now we are only teaching Korean. We do not know what other languages will be included in the future, but our name is still TongTong “language” class.

Ahn Pyeong-an: I joined in 2018. When I was studying abroad, I was interested in this field, as I taught Korean in the Korean club Arirang with Song-i and Chan-song, and I felt that I collaborated very well with Song-i. Honestly, I did not think I would become a Korean teacher at the time because my major was engineering. After graduating from college, I worked as a researcher for four years. When I saw Chan-song and Song-i working at TongTong, Korean language education seemed appealing to me, and I had a vision. While working at my former job, I gradually acquired related degrees and qualifications, and began working in classes and on textbooks in earnest from 2018. I also managed TongTong’s YouTube channel.

GN: What teaching methods do you use, and who are your target students?
Hong Song-i: Usually, TongTong follows a regular program. In the regular class, we teach using our self-developed textbooks and a full-length book reading program. For the group classes, we do team teaching to make the most of the diversity and strengths of our respective team members. Special lectures or classes are held four to five times a year on various topics. I am constantly working on the textbooks, and my dream is to publish them someday. There are many different types of learners, so we need to meet their special needs. Students who are about to take the TOPIK or KIIP exams are preparing for those exams. There are also international students who want to get help with college entrance exams or classes and assignments.

Ahn Pyeong-an: Currently, 70 percent of our students are native English teachers. As Song-i mentioned, there are students preparing for the TOPIK and KIIP exams, as well as office workers who want to correct their professional terms or intonation for a smooth work situation. Sometimes there are children who are about to enter elementary school or need help with their homework after entering school. We teach through a children's program under the direction of Chan-song, who majored in early childhood education. Also, we teach Chinese characters that are frequently used in Korean.

GN: What do you like the most about teaching? 
Ahn Pyeong-an: I have liked teaching since I was young. I was not interested in studying because I was busy playing in middle school, but I was so into studying as a high school student that I used to tutor my juniors and friends for free. The reason why I like teaching is that if I share what I know with others, I can learn much more thoroughly from the process of teaching itself.

Hong Song-i: I think so, too. While teaching Korean, I have met people from various cultural backgrounds with many different thoughts, which allows me to constantly learn. I try to learn my students’ mother tongues as much as I can, and as a result, I have learned English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Portuguese, and others. For most of these languages, I have not advanced beyond an elementary level, but I can understand the difficulties of my learners more deeply, which helps a lot when teaching. That said, I learned not only languages but also culture, thoughts, and lifestyles that are different from mine. Little by little, I think I have learned to better accept people as they are.

GN: How is TongTong different from other language academies? Also, what are the main challenges in teaching foreigners the Korean language? 
Hong Song-i: First of all, it is because our teachers’ abilities are excellent. (Just kidding!) I think the advantage of TongTong is that we have small classes with a maximum number of six people. In addition, classes are planned according to the needs of the students. For example, among the special classes that have been held, cooking classes and dialect classes are memorable. Both classes were suggested and tested with students first. The response was also very good, to the point where we received requests to open them again. As a side note, Pyeong-an loves marathons, and he had a lot of fun with students who wanted to go on a marathon, and mountain climbing, when time permitted.

Ahn Pyeong-an: When teaching a language, it is often difficult due to certain aspects not directly part of the language, such as the culture it coincides with, and I think this is the reason to constantly learn. I always feel that I have to study and consider of my history and cultural background. I will always try to learn with a humble attitude. I think our strength is that we are good at motivating our students. There is also a time when many students face a slump in language study, but there are many long-term students at TongTong who have made tremendous progress. For example, a student who left Korea two weeks ago participated in classes online at Incheon Hotel during her return trip, and one student got up at 4:00 in the morning their local time to participate in a group class at 6:00 p.m. Korean time. 

GN: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know many businesses are facing hardships. Please tell us how the pandemic has affected your business. 
Hong Song-i: Of course, I was worried at the beginning of COVID-19, but TongTong’s advantage was that we had small classes and kept communicating with the students all the time. There were periods when meetings became difficult, and I was worried that we could not show our strengths. However, our strength has been even greater during the COVID-19 situation. Even though the academy was closed for several months, we still met online, sometimes exchanging homework for self-study. I did not stop communicating during those periods, and neither did the students. TongTong teachers always talk with one another. Crises come and go, but in fact, we are richer and warmer in our hearts as a result of our perseverance.

GN: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? What is the most challenging part? 
Ahn Pyeong-an: I am very pleased not only when students improve their Korean language skills, but also when they show passion for Korean culture and open their hearts to Koreans. In addition, it is most rewarding when both the teachers and the students work hard to achieve their goals together. Not long ago, an international student at Korea University received a good grade with the help of TongTong, and they sent a thank-you message on SNS. And there is the time when I received a thank-you call from a student who passed the welding industry driver’s test, and another call from an international lawyer who finished studying legal terminology. I was also overwhelmed when a student sent me a message saying that they got good results on their entrance exam, TOPIK, and KIIP tests at Chonnam National University. I know how hard they had studied, and we tried our best to teach them. The most difficult part of this job is the parting moments. When there is a long-term adjournment that becomes necessary, I am deeply saddened. I have gotten used to it a lot now, but it still is not easy to say goodbye.

Hong Song-i: At the entrance of the academy, there is an entire wall decorated with postcards. All of them were written by students during their travels or after leaving Korea. Each postcard is a special memory. At first, there were two postcards hanging on the wall, but the wall has become crowded over the years, so we are expanding the area to the other wall. When students leave Korea, they do not keep in touch as often as before, but they do not forget to tell us their good news on a special day. In February last year, when the spread of the coronavirus began, I received calls from a lot of people. And there are so many things to show off in regards to TongTong’s affairs, such as a design student who made the TongTong logo look really cool, and a computer programming student who made the TongTong app. I think the biggest difficulty in running the business has been dealing with the fact that some people treat our students differently because they are foreigners. It was sad for us to see students having a difficult time because of this. For example, in the early days of the business, I experienced giving up my first plan for a location in the face of strong opposition from local residents to TongTong’s planned office. The reason was foreigners, even though it used to be a daycare center. That experience aside, we are doing well in the place where we have settled down, feeling the consideration of the residents here, who are indeed very generous and kind.

통통식 언어 정복, 한국어가 쉬워지는 곳

광주에 거주하는 외국인 중 한 명으로서, 한국어를 공부한다는 것이 어렵기만 한 게 아니라 시간이 걸린다는 것, 게다가 적당한 수업을 찾기 힘들다는 것을 알고 있다. 하지만 통통 언어 교실을 발견한 후 언어에 대한 더 다양한 지식을 습득할 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 퇴근 후 저녁 시간을 활용해서 스트레스 없이 나만의 속도에 맞춰 공부하는 것이 가능했다. 나와 같은 상황인 사람들을 돕고 싶어서 그들의 업무를 살펴보기 위해 통통의 운영자들에게 연락했다. - 멜리네

광주 뉴스 (이하 광) : 안녕하세요. 인터뷰에 응해주셔서 감사합니다. 독자들에게 자기소개 부탁드립니다.
홍송이(이하 홍) : 안녕하세요. 제 이름은 홍송이입니다. 저는 평생 광주에서 살고 있는 한국어 원어민 강사입니다. 어렸을 때 아버지를 따라 이사를 했을 때 몇 년, 교환 학생으로서 필리핀에 간 1년을 제외하고는 말이죠.
안 평안(이하 안) : 제 이름은 안 평안입니다. 여기 통통에서 한국어를 가르칩니다. 원래 광주 출신이 아니지만 군 복무를 마치고 전남대학교에 입학한 이후 이곳에서 계속 살았습니다. 광주는 제 두 번째 고향입니다.

광: 어떻게 같이 일을 하시게 됐고 얼마나 오랫동안 같이 일해오고 계시는가요?
안: 2017년 통통에서 시작한 지 벌써 4년이 넘어가네요. 송이 선생님은 그보다 훨씬 전인 2008년에 알게 됐어요. 지금은 동업하며 공동 경영을 하고 있지만, 저희 둘 다 같은 대학에 다니는 교환학생으로 필리핀 마닐라에서 처음으로 만났습니다. 믿을 수 없을지 모르지만 홍 선생님이 생각보다 나이가 많으시거든요(웃음). 이런 좋은 동업자를 만나게 된다니 행운이라고 생각하지만, 같이 일하는 것을 결정하기까지 좀 망설였던 것은 사실이에요. 가족에 대해 우선 생각해야 했거든요(홍 선생님과 제 아내가 자매지간이라 심사숙고하고 싶었어요.)
홍: 안 선생님이 제가 더 나이가 많다고 했지만 겨우 1년 차이예요. 저희가 외국에서 공부하던 때가 필리핀에서 한류가 최고였어요. 저는 원래 한국어 강의에 관심이 있어서 아리랑이라는 한국어 모임에서 일했어요. 찬송(다른 통통 직원), 평안과 저는 같이 일했었고 서로 호흡이 잘 맞아서 같이 일하는 것을 꿈꿔보기 시작했어요. 귀국 후 찬송 선생님과 제가 처음으로 한국어 교습 사업을 시작했고 회사에서 일하던 평안 선생님에게 함께하자고 설득했어요. 후에 한국계 미국인인 유미란(미란다 뉴) 선생님과 함께하게 되었고 총 4명의 한국어 선생님들이 같이 일하게 되었어요.

광: 필리핀에서 만나기 전에는 어떤 일을 하셨어요?
홍: 교환학생에 참여하기 전에 전남대에서 영어를 공부하면서 국제 학생들에게 한국어를 가르쳤어요. 제 모국어지만 한국어를 가르치는 것은 생각했던 것보다 어려웠고 교사양성과정을 시작하면서 체계적으로 배우기 시작했어요. 한국어 교사로서 자리 잡기 전에 영어학원에서 일했었지만, 항상 한국어 학원에서 제가 좋아하는 사람들과 일을 시작하는 꿈이 있었어요. 이후 광주국제교류센터에서 자원활동가로 한국어를 가르치다가 나중에 간사가 되었습니다. 다행히도 제가 존경하던 신경구 소장님과 국제교류센터에서 3년간 일을 할 수 있었어요. 소중한 추억들과 잊지 못할 많은 것들을 센터에서 배울 수 있었어요. 그때가 비록 모두 세계 곳곳에 흩어져있지만 지금도 때때로 연락하며 가깝게 지내는 저의 첫 번째 한국어 학생들을 만났을 때에요. 센터에서의 경험 덕분에 참가하는 사람들에게 따뜻한 기억을 남길 수 있는 언어 교실을 꿈꾸기 시작했어요. 

2004년 찬송을 포함한 몇몇 선생님들과 소통하기 시작했어요. 처음에는 한국어뿐만이 아니라 일본어와 중국어 선생님들도 같이했어요. 언어와 마음으로 소통할 수 있다는 뜻으로 ‘통통 언어 수업’이라고 이름을 지었죠. 2018년 찬송 씨가 평안 선생님을 성공적으로 스카우트한 후 미란다 뉴 선생님이 들어오시면서 저희 팀이 만들어졌어요. 미란다 선생님은 전남대에서 한국어 교육 석사를 마치신 후 언어교육에서의 전공을 살려서 멋진 수업을 해주고 계세요. 처음에 함께했던 다른 외국인 선생님들은 각자의 사정으로 한국을 떠나셨고 이제는 한국어 수업만 운영하고 있습니다. 나중에 어떤 언어가 더해질지는 모르겠지만 여전히 저희는 통통 “언어” 교실이랍니다.

안: 저는 2018년에 일을 시작했어요. 외국에서 공부하던 때에 송이, 찬송 선생님과 한국어 모임인 아리랑에서 한국어를 가르치게 되면서 이 분야에 관심을 두게 됐어요. 송이 선생님과 협업이 잘 된다고 느꼈어요. 사실은 그 당시에는 한국어 선생님이 될 거라고 생각하지 않았어요. 제 전공이 공학이었거든요. 졸업 후 연구원으로 4년간 일했습니다. 찬송과 송이 선생님이 통통에서 일하는 것을 보니 한국어 언어교육이 매력적으로 보였고 비전을 갖게 됐죠. 아직 전 직장에서 일하고 있는 동안 관련 학위와 자격을 갖게 되고 2018년부터 수업을 시작하고 교재 일을 시작했습니다. 통통의 유튜브 채널도 운영했었어요. 

광: 어떤 교수법을 사용하고 있으며, 대상 학생은 어떻게 되나요?
홍 : 통통은 보통 정규 프로그램을 따릅니다. 정규 수업에서는 자체 개발 한 교과서와 전체 책 읽기 프로그램을 사용하여 가르칩니다. 그룹 수업의 경우 각 팀원의 다양성과 장점을 최대한 활용하기 위해 팀 교육을 합니다. 1 년에 4 ~ 5 회 다양한 주제로 특강이나 수업이 진행됩니다. 계속해서 교재 작업을하고 있는데 언젠가는 교재출판하는 것이 꿈입니다. 다양한 유형의 학습자가 있으므로 그들의 특별한 요구를 충족해야합니다. TOPIK 또는 KIIP 시험을 치르려는 학생들은 시험을 준비하고 있습니다. 대학 입학 시험이나 수업 및 과제에 도움을 받고자하는 국제학생도 있습니다.

안 : 현재 우리 학생들의 70 %가 영어 원어민 교사입니다. 송이씨가 말했듯이 TOPIK와 KIIP 시험을 준비하는 학생과 원활한 업무 환경을 위해 전문 용어나 억양을 교정하고 싶은 직장인도 있어요. 때로 초등학교에 곧 입학 할 예정이거나 입학 후 숙제에 도움이 필요한 아이들이 있구요. 유아 교육을 전공 한 찬송씨의 지도로 어린이 프로그램을 통해 가르칩니다. 또한 한국어에서 자주 사용되는 한자를 가르칩니다. 

광: 가르치는 것에 대해 가장 좋아하는 것은 무엇인가요?
안: 어릴 때부터 가르치는 것을 좋아했습니다.  중학교에선 뛰어 놓느라 바빠서 공부에 관심이 없었지만, 고등학생 때 공부에 엄청나게 집중하면서 후배들과 친구들을 공짜로 가르치곤 했지요. 가르치는 것을 좋아하는 이유는 내가 아는 것을 다른 사람들과 공유하면 가르치는 과정에서 훨씬 더 철저하게 배울 수 있기 때문이에요.

홍 : 저도 그렇게 생각해요. 한국어를 가르치면서 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 다양한 생각을 하는 사람들을 만났기 때문에 끊임없이 배울 수 있었어요. 가능한한 학생들의 모국어를 배우려고 노력하고 그 결과 영어, 중국어, 일본어, 프랑스어, 포르투갈어 등을 배웠습니다. 대부분 이 언어들의 초급 이상은 못 되지만 학습자의 어려움을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있어서 가르치는 데 많은 도움이 돼요. 즉, 언어뿐만 아니라 저와는 다른 문화, 생각, 생활 방식도 배웠습니다. 사람들을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 법을 조금씩 배웠다고 생각돼요.

광 : 통통은 다른 어학원과 어떻게 다른가요? 외국인에게 한국어를 가르치는 데 있어 가장 큰 어려움은 어떤 건가요?
 홍 : 우선 선생님들의 능력이 뛰어나기 때문이지요. (농담입니다!) 통통의 장점은 최대 6명으로 구성된 소규모 수업이 있다는 거예요. 학생들의 필요에 따라 수업이 계획됩니다. 예를 들어, 진행된 특별 수업 중 요리 수업과 사투리 수업이 기억에 남습니다. 두 수업 모두 학생들에 의해 제안되고 테스트 되었어요. 다시 열어 달라는 요청을 받을 정도로 반응도 매우 좋았고요. 참고로 평안은 마라톤을 좋아하고 시간이 허락되면 마라톤을 하거나 등산을 하고 싶은 학생들과 즐겁게 지냈습니다.

안 : 언어를 가르칠 때 언어와 직접적으로 일치하지 않는 문화 등 어떤 면은 종종 어려워서 끊임없이 배워야 하는 이유라고 생각돼요. 항상 제 역사와 문화적 배경을 공부하고 고려해야 한다고 느낍니다. 항상 겸손한 자세로 배우려고 노력할 거예요. 저희 강점은 학생들에게 동기를 부여하는 데 능숙하다는 것이지요. 많은 학생이 어학 공부의 슬럼프에 빠지는 시기가 있지만 통통에는 엄청난 발전을 이룬 장기 학생들이 많이 있습니다. 예를 들어 2주 전 한국을 떠난 학생이 돌아오는 길에 인천에 있는 호텔에서 온라인 수업에 참여했고 한 학생은 현지 시각으로 새벽 4시에 일어나 한국의 오후 6시에 그룹 수업에 참여했어요.

광 : 코로나로 인해 많은 사업이 어려움에 처했다고 알고 있는데 통통에는 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 얘기해 주세요.
홍 : 물론 코로나 초반에는 걱정이 됐지만 통통의 장점은 소규모 수업으로 학생들과 항상 소통한다는 점이었어요. 만남이 어려워지는 시기가 있었고 우리의 힘을 보여줄 수 없을까 걱정이 됐지만, 우리의 힘은 코로나 상황에서 훨씬 더 강해졌습니다. 몇 달 동안 문을 닫았음에도 불구하고 여전히 온라인에서 만났고 때로는 자가 학습을 위해 숙제를 교환하기도 했어요. 저는 그 기간 의사소통을 중단하지 않았고 학생들도 마찬가지였습니다. 통통 선생님들은 항상 서로 이야기해요. 위기는 왔다가 사라지지만 사실 우리는 인내의 결과로 우리 마음이 더 풍요롭고 따뜻해진다고요.

광: 일하면서 가장 보람 있는 부분은 어떤 건가요? 가장 어려운 부분은요?
안 : 학생들이 한국어 능력을 향상할 뿐만 아니라 한국 문화에 대한 열정을 보여주고 한국인들에게 마음을 열 때 매우 기뻐요. 또한 교사와 학생이 함께 목표를 달성하기 위해 열심히 노력할 때 가장 보람이 있습니다. 얼마 전 고려대 유학생이 통통의 도움으로 좋은 성적을 받고 SNS를 통해 감사 메시지를 보냈어요. 그리고 용접업계 운전면허 시험에 합격한 학생으로부터 감사 전화를 받거나 법률 용어 공부를 마친 국제 변호사로부터 또 다른 전화를 받았을 때도 있었습니다.  전남 대학교 입학시험, TOPIK, KIIP 시험에서 좋은 성적을 받았다는 학생의 메시지를 보내 주셔서 감동했어요.  저는 학생들이 얼마나 열심히 공부했는지 알고 있고 저희도 가르치는 데 최선을 다했습니다. 이 일에서 가장 어려운 부분은 헤어지는 순간이에요. 장기적으로 쉬는 것이 필요했을 때 정말 슬펐어요. 지금은 아주 익숙해졌지만, 아직 작별 인사하기가 쉽지 않답니다.

홍 : 학원 입구에는 벽 전체가 엽서로 장식되어 있어요. 여행 중이나 한국을 떠난 학생들이 쓴 거예요. 각 엽서가 특별한 추억입니다. 처음에는 두 장의 엽서로 시작했는데 시간이 지나면서 그 벽이 꽉 차서 다른 벽으로 넓혀 가고 있어요. 학생들이 한국을 떠나면 예전처럼 자주 연락하진 않지만 특별한 날에 좋은 소식을 전하는 것은 잊지 않아요. 지난해 2월 코로나바이러스 확산이 시작된 때 많은 사람으로부터 전화를 받았습니다. 그리고 통통 로고를 멋지게 보이게 한 디자인 학생과 통통 앱을 만든 컴퓨터 프로그래밍 학생 등 통통의 일과 관련하여 자랑할 일이 너무나도 많습니다. 학원을 운영하는 데 가장 큰 어려움은 저희 학생들이 외국인이기 때문에 그들을 다르게 대하는 사람들이 있다는 사실입니다. 이 때문에 학생들이 힘든 시간을 보내는 것을 보고 슬펐습니다. 예를 들어, 사업 초창기에는 지역 주민들의 강한 반대 때문에 처음 계획했던 사무실을 포기한 적이 있어요. 노인주간보호센터로 사용되던 공간이었는데도 외국인이라는 이유였죠. 그 경험들 외에는 지금 위치에서 정말 관대하고 친절한 주민들의 배려를 느끼며 잘 지내고 있습니다.
